Anima/Animus

A pair of complementary terms taken from the analytical psychology of C.G. Jung referring to the archetypal image of the opposite sex. The term Anima refers to a man's archetypal image of women. And the Animus, to a woman's archetypal image of men. These images often bear little relation to any actual relationship a person may be in. They are influenced by images which originate from the unconscious (early childhood, pre-natal or earlier incarnations). In order to develop, a person needs to become aware of these concepts and to consciously integrate them into any relationship.

In astrology, the so-called feminine and masculine planets (polarities) indicate the characteristics of the Anima-Animus images: in a man's horoscope, the house and zodiacal sign of Venus and the Moon, together with their aspects, reflect his Anima image. For example, if they are Scorpionic in nature, he will unconsciously look for a deeply passionate woman who doesn't shy away from the darker aspects of life. If, on the other hand, Gemini is the dominant quality, he will unconsciously be drawn to open, light-hearted women of a more intellectual nature who aren't short for words and are open to sharing new experiences.

In a woman's horoscope, the house and zodiacal sign of Mars and the Sun, together with their aspects, give insights into her image of the Animus. For example, if the sign of Taurus is dominant, she is likely to be attracted to stable, sensual and materially well-off men whom she feels she can rely on. If the sign of Leo is emphasized by masculine planets, she will long for a shining hero whom she can admire, either consciously or unconsciously.
