Mythology of the star constellation

The constellation shows a man who is pouring water from a jug. According to one tradition he is the Trojan Ganymede, the most beautiful youth in the world whom even Zeus found attractive. He (Zeus) brought him to Mount Olympus and appointed him cup bearer to the gods. It was Ganymede's task to indulge the other gods by pouring the divine nectar from this jug. As compensation for stealing the boy Zeus gave his father two immortal steeds and a golden vine.

According to another tradition, the constellation of Aquarius depicts the divine blacksmith Hephaistos. Hephaistos was an eccentric man with all manners of idiosyncrasies. He compensated for his physical imperfection (he limped which was considered to be very ugly) with his great technical abilities. He was unforgiving to those who showed him disrespect, including his wife Aphrodite, the goddess of love and beauty. She often cheated on him with Ares the god of war. In order to catch and shame them, he made a golden net which covered and trapped them during their love making. He then invited all the other gods who found the whole scene very amusing and it was only after Poseidon intervened that he was prepared to release the pair.

Interpretation

Aquarius is the eleventh sign of the zodiac and is concerned with gaining a greater perspective of life. Each individual is part of a wider community which he/she feels part of and which enables individuals to achieve considerably more than they could on their own.

Individuals with a strong emphasis on this sign in their natal chart are interested in the greater good of society. They can picture a fairer society without the existing hierarchies, in which every person can follow their own interests as long as they don't infringe on the rights of others while doing so. For Aquarius people, freedom is not just one social concern among many - for them, personal freedom and independence is what they long for most. Although they have a highly developed sense of their own individuality and uniqueness, they need like-minded individuals to help them pursue and realise their interests and ideas.

Aquarius individuals are interested in and have a keen eye for the larger scheme of things which is helped by their impersonal attitude to the events around them. They are visionaries and are very intuitive and inventive.

They are sometimes in danger of being reluctant to get involved on a practical level and can end up rejecting anything which goes beyond superficial observation. In addition, their emphasis on their own individuality can lead to a compulsive desire to do everything differently to everyone else.

Planets and axes in Aquarius take on some of the typical qualities associated with this sign such as originality, love of freedom and of experimentation.

Both Aquarius and its opposite sign Leo share a desire to be special, but whereas Leo longs to stand out from the crowd, Aquarius longs to stand apart from the crowd. Mental agility is a trait common to Aquarius and the other air signs Gemini and Libra: Gemini can assimilate many different ideas and has the ability to view things from another person's perspective. Libra strives to find the common denominator linking different perspectives and Aquarius has the ability to view things from a completely new and unconventional perspective. From the two signs that stand in square to it Aquarius can learn the value of commitment (Taurus) and profundity (Scorpio).

The Sun is in detriment in Aquarius.
