Belief

It is not so easy to dismiss the subject of belief in connection with astrology because personal experience plays an important role. Astrology is sometimes compared to religion and some opponents of astrology characterise it as a substitute or pseudo-religion. The proponents of psychological astrology in particular are vehement in their rejection of this accusation. They feel that their concept of astrology as an aid to greater self-understanding is fundamentally different from the idea of religious belief. They share a conviction with psychology that religious or spiritual convictions are of secondary importance compared to an individual's willingness to engage in the process of gaining greater self-awareness ([[Belief in Astrology]]). However, the question can also be put in its most basic sense - i.e. whether a person believes in a process leading to a deepening of self-awareness.

On the other hand, esoteric astrology cannot so easily avoid the comparison with religious belief. The latin word 'religio' means 'to connect or reconnect with the source or origin', and in this sense esoteric astrology claims to provide an answer to the time-old question: What is our origin? Where are we headed? What is the meaning of life? Therefore it might well be argued that esoteric astrology shares many features of religion or could even be seen as a rival to religions that claim to answer the same questions. In the end, it is up to each individual to decide whether astrology is capable of providing the answers to these questions. As with every serious religious conviction, believing in esoteric astrology does not equate with an indecisive stance of "not- knowing", but is based on subjective experience that cannot be objectively verified.
