Domicile

A sign of the zodiac in which a planet is the ruler. The qualities of this sign most closely resemble those of the ruling planet (e.g. Mars and Aries). The sign situated opposite the domicile is the planet's detriment. If a planet is in its detriment its qualities are expressed in ways that seem diametrically opposed to its innate qualities (e.g. Mars in Libra). There are two further categories: A planet is said to be in exaltation in a particular sign (e.g. Mars in Capricorn) which is seen as possessing similar qualities to the planet in question. And if the planet is situated in the opposing sign it is said to be in its sign of planetary fall (i.e. Mars in Cancer). This is similar to detriment in that the sign is seen as possessing qualities that are in many ways foreign to the planet in question.

This kind of categorisation can easily lead to the idea that a planet in a particular sign of the zodiac is somehow 'bad' or 'good', and it is for this reason that such a categorisation has become obsolete in modern psychological astrology. Classical astrology still makes use of these categories because it can make it easier to visualise the various ways in which planetary energies find expression when placed in different signs of the zodiac.
