Synonym: Hamburg School of Astrology

An astrological school founded on the 17th August 1948 at 14.45 (according to an entry in the register) in Hamburg which was greatly influenced by the astrologer Alfred Witte. The exact title is "Astrologische Studiengemeinschaft Hamburger Schule" (ASHS). Its precursor was the so-called "Kepler Zirkel" (Kepler Circle) founded by the astrologer Friedrich Sieggrün (20.12.1877 - 04.05.1951). Sieggrün introduced Witte and his ideas to the group. The third influential character around the time was Ludwig Rudolph who published their ideas.

The Hamburg School is based on the ideas of classical astrology but introduced the following six fundamental changes:

  • Their own house system with equal houses and the Ascendant at 0 degrees of Libra and the MC at 0 degrees of Cancer
  • Rotatable dials of either 90 or 360 degrees to help with the analysis and decoding of the houses. The planets and any sensitive points related to the topic being analysed are marked on the perimeter of the dials.
  • The First Point of Aries which marks the beginning of the 360 degree division of the circle and plays an important role in interpretations.
  • Eight Trans-Neptunians that are not identical with the recently discovered celestial bodies beyond Neptune in the Kuiper Belt. They were intuitively "discovered" by Witte and Sieggrün. Because there has been no confirmation of their physical existence they are considered to be "immaterial centres of energy".
  • The term planetary figures defined by Witte as "symmetrical pattern of planets and points of reference around a common axis".
  • The practical possible applications which arise from the planetary figures in relation not only to the interpretation of the natal chart but also to prognoses, the comparison of relationships and the analysis of events and places. The latter indicates the effect a particular place is likely to have on a particular individual.

The Hamburg School is known for its accurate prognoses. The Hamburg School's continuing emphasis on various techniques can probably be traced back to the fact that Witte himself was a technical surveyor. However, its approach also shows a deep spiritual connection. The horoscope is considered to be creative plan for each individual life which is understood as being one in a long cycle of incarnations. The Hamburg School's view is that astrology is a "welcome orientation guide" on the way to perfection because it helps us get to know what our inner potential is. The school is also an active publisher. The magazine "Hamburger Hefte" has been published quarterly since 1961. The magazine was originally published by Ludwig Rudolph and then by his son Udo who had close connections to the Hamburg School. Michael Feist has been the publisher since 1996 and since 1997 the school has published its own paper called theASHS-Forum.

The Hamburg School is also well known in other countries and is known in the English-speaking world as the Uranian System. Its legacy is being continued by Udo Rudolph.
