Kuiper Belt
From Astrowiki-en
A ring consisting of many thousands of minor planets which lies beyond the orbits of Neptune and Pluto and which was named after the Dutch-American astronomer Gerard Kuiper (1905-1973). Astronomers have continually been discovering new aspects of the Kuiper Belt since its discovery in the last decade of the 20th century. Gerard Kuiper had already conjectured about its existence in the 1940s. Astronomers can still only speculate about many of its qualities because direct observation of the individual bodies remains extremely difficult. The Kuiper Belt has been compared to the belt of asteroids between Mars and Jupiter but their chemical and physical properties are almost certainly different.
