Mythology of the constellation
The constellation of Pisces is said to show two fish with their tails bound together swimming in opposite directions. In Greek mythology, these fish are considered to be closely tied to Aphrodite, the goddess of beauty and love. She made her escape from the terrible Typhon which the Earth goddess Gaia, in a fit of rage, had set loose upon the gods. Aphrodite was hiding in the reeds of the banks of the river Euphrates with her son Eros when two fish swam past and brought them both to safety. According to another version, Aphrodite and Eros transformed themselves into two fish and are forever bound together.
Interpretation
Pisces is the twelfth and last sign of the zodiac. This is where the individual desires to merge with a larger whole that goes beyond the limitations of human existence.
People born with an emphasis of horoscope factors in this sign have a powerful imagination, longing and intuition. Spirituality and religion tend to play an important role in their lives. They have direct access to the spiritual world in which the principle of cause and effect is no longer valid.
They also tend to have a strong social conscience. They can selflessly help others in need and, because they experience the suffering of others as if it were their own, can sacrifice their own needs to help them. They are like seismographs in sensing things going on around them.
There is a danger that such individuals find it difficult to differentiate between where their own boundaries end and those of others start. Because their longing to dissolve these boundaries is so strong, they can have a tendency to completely ignore their own needs and become slaves to those of others.
Pisces born individuals are often dreamers. They can find it hard to accept that reality sometimes doesn't match their imagination and continue to long for their idealistic fantasy world. They want to be redeemed and to redeem others, and if they remain unaware can be in danger of succumbing to all kinds of addictive behaviour. Pisces born individuals have a deep sense of unity of all life and connection of all people.
Axes and planets in the sign of Pisces are characterised by devotion, otherworldliness and sensitivity.
Pisces individuals and those born in the opposite sign of Virgo both have the ability to adapt to their environment: The Virgoan adapts to the circumstances and adjusts their expectations accordingly, whereas the Piscean identifies with circumstances. There is a profound aspect to Pisces shared by the other water signs Cancer and Scorpio. Cancer is profoundly aware of the emotional depths, Scorpio is aware of the depths of existence, and Pisces is acutely aware of the interconnectedness of all existence. The two signs in square aspect to Pisces - Gemini and Sagittarius - can help Pisces individuals to get in touch with the intellect and convictions.
