In Chinese tradition the division of all existence into two archetypal forces. It is related to the Western concept of polarity and translates into dark and light. Yin is the feminine principle, the Earth, the darkness, passive and receptive. Yang is the masculine principle, light and active. The concept of Yin and Yang is over 2500 years old. One cannot exist without the other and each one is the necessary complement of the other, and together they create the "great archetypal beginning". The Yin/Yang symbol shows that each principle is present in the other. Chinese astrology, medicine and alchemy are all based on the Yin/Yang principle.
